For a second year, Chester Beatty is celebrating Culture Night both onsite and online. Our galleries, gift shop, and the Silk Road Café will remain open for you to visit until 10pm, and we are pleased to offer guided tours of Edo in Colour exhibition and permanent collection galleries. Live Online Workshop for Families: Block Printed Textiles
Use fun and experimental block printing techniques to create your own textile patterns diary or sketchbook. Learn about traditional designs and printing techniques from the Edo period and make your own patterned textiles at home.
Onsite Curator’s Tour of Edo in Colour: Fashion, Gender and Fortune
Japan’s woodblock prints combine sophisticated artistry with colourful tales of life in urban Edo (modern Tokyo). In this special tour for Culture Night, Curator Dr Mary Redfern will introduce a host of prints, newly displayed in the museum’s Edo in Colour exhibition. Suitable for adults only. Live Online Workshop for Teens: Kabuki Inspired Puppets
Inspired by the kabuki theatre, join us and create your very own puppet dressed to dance and entertain. Bring your theatrical creature to life with glamorous costume and heavy make-up of the kabuki world. Let the magic begin.
Online Activity: Kanzashi Hair Ornament
Follow artist and crafter, Corinne Okada Takara, to learn how to make a traditional Japanese hair ornament, called kanzashi. Made from recycled materials, including a garden wire and food wrappers, this is a modern take on a classical Japanese decoration.
