Chinnery Gin is delighted to welcome Dr Patrick Conner to the Chester Beatty on 7th August 2019 to speak about the artist who inspired the gin, George Chinnery. Dr Patrick Conner is a director of the Martyn Gregory Gallery in London and the world’s leading authority on Chinnery, having written the standard reference on his life, George Chinnery, Artist of India and the China Coast (1993), along with several other books relating to East Asian Art. He has also curated exhibitions of Chinnery’s work, notably The Flamboyant Mr Chinnery at Asia House, London in 2011-12.
As part of the event, the Friends of the Chester Beatty will enjoy two Chinnery Dublin Dry Gin drinks and a guided gin tasting with Chinnery Spirits’ distiller, David Havelin. Dr Conner will continue the evening with a talk on George Chinnery, the Georgian-era artist who began his portrait painting career in Dublin before setting sail for India and China. Chinnery’s work is considered an important part of the visual historical record of the Old China Trade. Chinnery was a talented and brilliant artist, a portrait and landscape painter, often working in miniature. He painted industriously, producing many portraits of the western community in which he lived, as well as of local personalities and scenes of eastern life, working in all media.
Tickets to this once-off event are available to Friends of the Chester Beatty for €35 from the website. Non-Friends can also purchase tickets by calling Sabhbh on 01-4070759.
