Join Diana Delia and learn about three heroes celebrated in Firdausi’s Shahnama, or Book of Kings, and Nizami Ganjavi’s Book of Iskandar, and Khusrau and Shirin. The Shahnama, a great national epic of Iran preserving legends and historical recollections deeply influenced Nizami’s accounts of Alexander the Great and the Sassanian king, Khusrau II. The literary and historical significance of these three poems will be explored as well as the materials and methods used to render exquisite detail to the manuscript illustrations from these works on display at the Chester Beatty.
