Sketch, Draw and Colour: National Drawing Day at the Chester Beatty
This annual event, initiated by the National Gallery of Ireland, features museums, galleries, libraries, and cultural institutions nationwide participating in a day designed to encourage creativity and to honour sketchers, doodlers, and cartoonists of all ages.
Online Activity for Families: Imaginary Landscape with Elephants
There are many images of animals at the Chester Beatty and today we will have a closer look at the elephants. Follow artist Roxana Manouchehri and learn how to draw the elephant’s long trunk, large head with wide flat ears, white tusks and an enormous body with column-like legs.
Online Activity for Families: How to Make a Picture Book
Artist Jen O’Brien takes a closer look at Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro’s illustrations from the ‘Picture book of selected insects’ to create her own picture book. Starting with drawing, this video introduces mixed media techniques to capture the beauty of the natural world.
These videos will be available from 10am on 15 June.
Colouring Chester Beatty’s Collection
Not quite ready for free-hand sketching? Why not print out one of the images inspired by Chester Beatty’s collection and get colouring. This simple activity helps de-stress both children and adults by relaxing the brain and improving the creative process with the selection of colours and patterns you might like to add to the image you chose to decorate.
You can view these and other Chester Beatty artworks here on 15 May.
