In 1929, seven Manichaean manuscripts were discovered at Medinet Madi (Egypt). The larger portion were acquired by Chester Beatty. These texts been instrumental in reconstructing this once thriving faith. Manichaeism was founded by the prophet Mani, who saw the world as a battle between good and evil. From its birth in 3rd-century Mesopotamia, the religion spread throughout the Mediterranean world, into northern India, and central and eastern Asia.
